Unpaid Manuel Fernandes swaps Leiria for Setubal

Coach signs for struggling Sadinos

Manuel FernandesVitoria de Setubal have contracted Manuel Fernandes as their new coach. Fernandes has walked out on Uniao de Leiria to sign a 3-year contract at the Bonfim.

Although a risky decision on the face of it, it transpires that the experienced coach had several months’ wages in arrears, and was willing to write off the debt in order to be released to join Setubal.

“Only my family knows what I have gone through lately. The nights that I haven’t been able to sleep. Things have now been settled with Leiria and I’m not going to go into details. Now all I am thinking about is Vitoria de Setubal. I’m only bothered about looking ahead.” said Fernandes

Setubal have had a disastrous season so far. The team lie in penultimate place in the table and have been without a coach since sacking Carlos Azenha following a series of humiliating defeats, namely the 8-1 drubbing by Benfica and 4-0 loss, ironically at home to Leiria.

However, Fernandes may be just the man to turn things around. He joined Leiria in the 2008/09 season with the club in danger of dropping into the third tier of Portuguese football. A spectacular turnaround was orchestrated by Fernandes, culminating in promotion back up to the top flight.

This season Leiria have acquitted themselves well to life in the Liga Sagres, and are currently sitting comfortably in mid-table.
