Sporting close in on ‘Chilean Kaka’

Villarreal midfielder Matias Fernandez targeted by Lions

Matias FernandezSporting have admitted they are chasing Villarreal midfielder Matias Fernandez. The player himself, nicknamed Matigol, has reacted by saying he is “thrilled” with the news. The natural number 10 has been targeted as the Lions attempt to add creativity to their midfield options.

His agent Alesandre Santisteban yesterday told Portuguese paper Bola: “Matias is thrilled to hear of Sporting’s interest. It’s a big club with a lot of prestige, which always fight to be champions and which is very attractive to him.”

The son of a Chilean father and Argentine mother, Fernandez was born in Buenos Aires but moved to Chile at four years of age. He became a household name after four seasons at Colo Colo, playing a big part in driving the club to the domestic championship.

South American footballer of the year

In 2006 he was acclaimed as the South American footballer of the year, and was even dubbed the ‘Chilean Kaka’.

A lucrative move to Villarreal ensued, but things have not been easy in La Liga for the midfielder. He has played just 21 games, scoring 3 goals for the Spanish team.

Sporting are thought to be prepared to offer 3.5m euros for Fernandez, but given that Villarreal are asking for double that amount, a loan deal may be more probable.

Matias Fernandez is a fantastic player. Sporting would be lucky to sign him or get him on loan.
