Matias Fernandez promises “determination, effort and self-sacrifice”Chilean star arrives in Lisbon
Much is expected of the highly rated player, who was voted South American footballer of the year in 2006. Indeed, the 4.5m euros Sporting paid Villarreal for his services makes Fernandez one of the club’s most expensive ever players. Only Rodrigo Tello (7m euros in 2000), Mario Jardel (5.5m euros in 2001) and Marius Niculae (5m euros in 2001) have cost the Lions more. “I hope to play a good championship, show a lot of determination and hope I can do things well,” the 23-year-old told journalists waiting for him at the airport. “I can promise a lot of effort and self-sacrifice to give everything for Sporting’s shirt. I’m happy to be at a great club which has great players.” The player, nicknamed both Matigol and Mati, was keen to dampen down any excessive euphoria surrounding his transfer. Asked if he could promise Sporting the title he responded, “Calm down, I’ve only just arrived here!”

This was a great signing! They are one or two players away from making a Porto like impact in the Champions league.

I'm a Benfiquista and I have to say good signing by Sporting. I've been following this guy for quite some time, very talented.
