Capel visits accident victim

Spaniard relieved to see supporters recovering

Accident at the AlvaladeSporting’s Spanish winger Diego Capel went to Lisbon’s Santa Maria Hospital yesterday to visit the supporter who fell five metres when attempting to grab the Spaniard’s shirt at the end of Sporting’s victory over Uniao de Leiria on Sunday night.

Two fans fell into the concrete moat that separates the stands from the pitch. Initial reports suggested a tragedy had occurred, and Capel was in tears as the medical staff stabilised the two supporters.

Both supporters were transported to hospital. Fortunately the injuries were not as serious as at first thought. One suffered bad bruising and a dislocated shoulder and has already been discharged, while the other is to have an operation on a broken arm. Capel made a point of visiting the hospitalised accident victim as soon as possible.

“I spoke to him. He was in the company of his mother and his girlfriend, and I tried to cheer him up. I wished him a speedy recovery and hope that nothing like this happens again. I didn’t throw my shirt into the crowd. I wanted to give it to a supporter who has a son with diabetes, but these two lads appeared and ended up falling.

“I was really worried because they weren’t even moving. It was a big scare, but thank God it’s not so serious. It was a very difficult night for me because of what happened,” said Capel.

One of the pre-election promises of Sporting president Godinho Lopes was to get rid of the moat surrounding the pitch, and the club supremo said the administration were working towards that goal.

“Getting rid of the moat is a decision we have taken. It’s a big investment, but we are studying solutions,” said Lopes.

Only in Portugal would a club hire an architect to design a moat around the pitch in the year 2003.

Capel seems to be a great player and a great person, Sporting did really well to sign him. He just wanted a team who had faith in him and who valued him, now that he has that his content and playing well.

Good stuff Capel.
Great Job

Great job by Capel.
It's crazy how fans risk everything for a jersey. I know that they are expenssive, but they are available.

Let me add that I'm thrilled that the Alvalade is once again alive. Winning at home will be key in continuing this good will.

Mateus, what made the tragedy worse for the Texas Rangers was that it was the second fan that fell to his death. It was actually almost to the day a year apart.
I believe that they have raised the railling once again.
Crazy.

I hope they both got a signed shirt from him in the end! But a nice touch to go and visit them...

This could have ended badly. Earlier this year, a Texas Rangers fan fell to his death in front of his son while trying to catch a baseball. Such a terrible incident. I'm glad everyone is OK and I'm pleased to see Capel was so concerned.
