Oguchi Onyewu: “We’re going to do our best to win every competition we’re in”

Interview with giant American defender thriving at Sporting

Oguchi OnyewuUSA international Oguchi Onyewu says he is enjoying his football in Portugal and believes Sporting are genuine challengers to lift silverware on several fronts this season.
The commanding centre-back continued his fine form this weekend, helping Sporting achieve another clean sheet (the Lisbon club have conceded just four goals in their last 12 matches) and scoring the winner as the Lions overcame Nacional 1-0 at the Alvalade.
“I’ve said this from the beginning of the season. We’re going to do our best to win every competition that we’re in,” the 29-year-old told PortuGOAL and assembled reporters after the match on Saturday night.
“Right now we’re in good standing for all four competitions, so hopefully we can maintain that, and I think that Benfica and Porto and the rest of the league see that this is a different Sporting from the previous years and that we’re very strong as a team and as a unit and we’re going to continue to be.”
After some niggling injuries at the start of the season, the American has now firmly established himself as the reference point of Sporting’s parsimonious back four. Onyewu believes playing in Portugal has helped him up his game.
“I think Portugal is a very technical league, I think it mirrors the Spanish league where you have very fast technical players all across and I think playing in this league is definitely helping my game and helping me to reach my highest potential. Everybody is playing well and I’m happy to be in this league and I enjoy it every week.”

He is a fantastic center back! A big player for Sporting! This team can do great things! Right now Sporting is like a dream, they finally have the financial backing have some good international stars in the first team, still have great Portuguese players starring as well as starters and on the bench, and the youth team currently is full of amazing talent! It would be a dream for Sporting to win titles this season! The organization deserves it, and it could lay the foundation for a very great era for Sporting! I see all the pieces coming together for them now and I wish Sporting all the best this season and for many more! Sporting!!!!

Great signing on the cheap for SCP. I'm glad he's healthy and playing well.

I have to admit that he's fared much better than I ever would have thought. He has such great size and physical ability, but I didn't think he could keep up with the speed or technical ability of the Portuguese league. Kudos to Onyewu for doing so well. I hope this experience will help him play better for the US national team. The US needs their foreign based players to carry the team.
