Patrício renews with Sporting

Portugal number one to remain until 2018

Sporting have this afternoon confirmed that Rui Patrício has renewed his contract with the club, in a deal that will tie Portugal's number one to the club until the end of the 2017/18 season. The new contract contains a €40,000,000 release clause.

Patrício joined Sporting at the age of eleven in 1999, and was handed a full debut by coach Paulo Bento against Marítimo in November 2006, aged eighteen. That encounter saw him put then number one Ricardo on notice when he saved a penalty. A year later Patrício was Sporting's undisputed starter in goal, with Ricardo having departed for Real Betis.

In the years since Patrício has won two Taças de Portugal and two Supertaças with Sporting, and has also established himself as Portugal's number one since the appointment of Bento. Speculation linking the 24 year-old with a move abroad has been ever-present during this time, but today's news should put paid to that for the time being.

NP with your opinion on Rui, I know he has his lapses but I think overall he is a work in process and a great shot blocker. I think Mika has potential but I was disappointed by his game in the U-20 final against Brazil, he seemed a bit slow with his reactions but I will not judge him on one game. It is in the best interest of Portugal to have many good GKs to compete against Rui.
Good signing

I've never been a huge fan of Rui,granted that doesn't mean he can't continue to develop and grow as a keeper.
For me his mental lapses are the most worrisome. Bad decisions in touches out the back and bad positioning and/or movement for ball as well.
People say he had a good Euro's, but he was rarely tested.

This signing will only mean that Sporting that Sporting will have some leverage come transfer time. Hence it being a good move.

Sporting losing to Rio Ave 1-0 right now. Maybe they'll turn it around, but it seems like more dark days are ahead. Sad to say it as a Sporting fan, but this may not have been the best choice for him. Sporting is a basket case of a team.
Sorry Tony have always disagreed with you on Rui

I will agree with you in the Euros he didn't cost us this time.. but he has the weakest hands I ever saw in a first line GK.. and that will not change.. any good hard drive will go through his hands and into the net..

Also his aerial abilities and indecisiveness lead to weak goals..

Nothing has really changed from his U-20 days when he gave two easy goals up to Gambia..

He can win all the Tacas de Turd.. but in the real world those don't mean anything to anyone.

They should've sold him when they had the opportunity.. I feel sorry for my Sportinguista friends who deserve better between the pipes.

In the end Mika I think in a few years will be the better keeper.. although time will tell in that department.. especially with JJ's penchant of never playing Pork Chops..

Anyways.. with no ill intent I am happy for you but hope he gets replaced between the pipes for Portugal before the next World Cup.

Headline says contract is until 2018 - but text of post says 2012/13.

I assume 2018 is correct, which is good news, although sadly I know he will be gone before then after a big money move to a big club in the next year or two.
Congratulations Rui

Rui has clearly established himself as the #1 goalkeeper in Portugal. We have a reliable goalkeeper for the future. He can be the constant target for new goalkeepers to challenge and compete against.

I had fans who knew nothing of Rui prior to the game against Spain state Portugal did not have a GK, I told them he will make the saves when called on. After the game they came up to me and were amazed. He will get better and more confident with experience. At some point, hope he is able to move to a bigger club.
