Rocha dreams of Portugal call-upDefender settling in Belgium After a torrid spell in England with Tottenham Hotspur, former Benfica defender Richard Rocha is rebuilding his career in Belgium with champions Standard Liege.
Having signed for Standard at the end of the August transfer deadline, Rocha has been a regular in Les Rouches’ backline. the 31-year-old has featured in ten matches, often playing at left-back, in both league and Champions League, where a 2-0 win over Olympiacos last week kept Standard’s hopes of qualification for knockout phase alive. "We didn't change anything,” Rocha told Uefa.com when asked about his team‘s win over the Greek side, having lost the return fixture in Athens two weeks previous. “We shouldn't have lost the game on Matchday 3. On Wednesday we showed that we have a good team and the ability to win. We deserved the victory. Everything is wide open. The next game is in London against Arsenal and it will be very difficult, but we should still think about qualifying for the next phase. “Life in Belgium? I have only been here for a short period and I still haven't had much time to discover Belgium. I'm always training and playing, but it's a strong league with very competitive games. It's a very competitive championship and we have to do our best in every game to try and win. There's a lot of teams fighting for the top places, which is very good. The standard is good.” Although admittedly playing slightly out of position when asked by Standard coach Laszlo Boloni to perform at left-back, Rocha is aware that the left side of defence is often cited as a problem area for Carlos Queiroz’s Portugal side, and is unable to avoid thinking about the possibility of adding to his six international caps. “I have usually played as a central defender, and I feel at my best in that position, but I try to do well in every position. The only thing I want is to help the team. “It's true that what is missing in my career is playing in a big competition with the national team and I dream about the World Cup. I do my best but it depends on the national coach, Carlos Queiroz, picking me.”
