Leiria lock up Portuguese "Nedved"

Lis slap multi-million euro clause on unkown midfielder

rubenbrigido.jpgIf anyone is at all interested in snatching Ruben Brigido from the hands of Uniao de Leiria, they will have to cough up a whopping 15 million euros for the 19-year-old midfielder.

Who? That's right, the Leiria youth player has only played a measly 52 minutes of Portuguese top flight football, a 4-1 defeat to FC Porto in the final round of last season (still, 52 more minutes than Manchester United's Bebe).

But that has not stopped the executives at Leiria from renegotiating the contract of the player known as the Portuguese incarnation of Czech Republic star Pavel Nedved, and inserting a enormous release clause in his contract.

Brigido is now tied to Leiria until 2015 and the astronomical buyout price tag has not fazed the youngster in the slightest.

"I don't place great importance to this fact," Brigido told Maisfutebol. "I see it as a vote of confidence that the club has in me. It is not normal, but I just have to continue to work hard to justify this gamble."

"More responsibilties? All new contracts bring new responsibilities and this won't affect my daily life."

As for being dubbed the Luso Nedved, Brigido explains that it was nickname given to him, not so much because of the likeness in the way the two play, but rather the physical resemblence.

"They started to call me that when I arrived at Leiria, at junior level. I think it's more the physical similarities and not so much the style of play. He was a fantastic player and to be compared to him, logically, is an honour."
