Uniao de Leiria eye three points against Olhanense

Prolific striker Carlao sets "goal a game" target

CarlaoUniao de Leiria captain, Bruno Miguel, has his eyes firmly fixed on the three points in tomorrow’s match-up against fellow Liga Sagres newcomers Olhanense.

The encounter opens the second round of matches and Leiria’s Brazilian marksman Carlao (pictured) is aiming to build on his terrific record of 12 goals in 13 matches since arriving in Portugal.

“We fought with them for promotion last season and we know them well,” said captain Miguel. “Like us, they are fighting to stay up, but also for this reason we’ll be fighting for the victory.

“The earlier we can get our first three points the better, because if we guarantee our top-flight status early we can play a calmer championship.”

To achieve that aim coach Manuel Fernandes will be hoping his top striker maintains his golden touch in front of goal.

Spectacular run

Tall 23-year-old Brazilian forward, Carlao, arrived at the club in the January transfer window, and played a huge role in Leiria’s spectacular run in the second half of last season that ended in a second-place finish in the Liga Vitalis and promotion to Portugal’s top division.

Carlao scored 11 goals in 12 appearances in 2008/09, and despite not being 100% fit, the striker grabbed the equaliser to earn his team a point in their season opener at home to Rio Ave on Sunday.

The Brazilian is certainly not afraid of setting himself challenging targets. “First of all I want to play a whole season. Afterwards, if I manage to score in the 30 games it would be fantastic.”
