Almeida bags winner in Bremen win

Werder Bremen 2-1 Freiburg

Hugo Almeida made it four goals in his last three Bundesliga matches as he netted a late winner for Werder Bremen to give them all three points against Freiburg on Saturday afternoon.

The Portugal striker glanced home Claudio Pizarro’s cross with seventeen minutes remaining to give Bremen only their third win of the season. Freiburg had drawn level at 1-1 just after the hour when Julian Schuster’s goal cancelled out Aaron Hunt’s stunning 33rd minute opener for the hosts.

Ahead of the recent international break, Almeida had registered in the 2-2 draw at Bayer Leverkusen, as well as scoring a brace in the previous week’s 3-2 home win over Hamburg. With five goals to his name so far in the current campaign, the former Porto man is joint-second in the Bundesliga goalscoring charts behind Freiburg’s Papiss Cisse, who leads with seven.

The Bundesliga is pretty poor when it comes to defence in my opinion. It's easier to score in Germany, than most other big leagues, dare I say even Portugal. He wasn't even being marked properly in this goal.

I dont get this guy, he scores a bunch in the Bundeslige and cant for Portugal??...Wtf?? Hes a decent striker, but needs to pep it up a bit for the Seleccao, at this point, hes our only striker. Leidson is done, and Valera is more of a winger. What about Joao Silva? from Everton, anyone know much on this kid? High ratings so far Ive read.

Considering Portugal's lack of options in the attack, I agree with Felipe that Almeida is currently our best. He brings the level of physical play that we need at the striker position. Honestly though, as strange as it may seem, Portugal really just need him to be decoy in a sense. We need him to be a threat in the box and to hold the ball up so our support players can arrive and stuff like that. We do need him to convert his chances better when they come (like the one he blatantly missed against Iceland last week), but we have other players who can score even if he can't.

I'd like to see him develop his composure in front of goal, but other than that, if he stays healthy, he's got the starting job at Euro 2012 in my book.

Hes are best striker no matter what people say he is. He will get better for Portugal under bento. (hopefuly)

Almeida is a good striker, i just wish he performed better for the NT. He needs to because its important he keeps up with our improving midfield.
