Almeida on target as Bremen snatch point; derby joy for Moreira

Saturday action

Hugo Almeida continued his recent scoring form as Werder Bremen maintained their unbeaten run with a last-gasp equaliser at home to Bundesliga champions Wolfsburg. Meanwhile, Almani Moreira’s Partizan are celebrating a special three points after winning 2-1 at arch rivals Red Star.

The eagerly anticipated clash between the two German heavyweights saw a Portuguese on either side, with former Porto stopper Ricardo Costa taking his place in the Wolfsburg defence, while Almeida started in attack for Bremen, who went into the match unbeaten in all competitions since August.

It was the visitors who struck first five minutes before the break, when Edin Dzeko scored a superb individual effort, but Almeida equalised on 63 minutes. The ball broke to the Portuguese inside the area following a corner, and Almeida lashed his finish past Roberto Benaglio to bring the teams back on level terms.

Dzeko looked to have won it for Wolfsburg when he restored the champions’ advantage with another well-taken goal four minutes from the end of normal time. However, Per Metesacker rose to head home a corner from Mesut Ozil’s delivery in injury time to secure a valuable point for the hosts, who again go temporarily top of the pile in Germany.

Meanwhile, it was a great afternoon for Serbian champions Partizan, who took on fierce Belgrade rivals Red Star in the capital. Goals from Lamine Diarra and Cleo gave the visitors all three points and took them to just one point behind their enemies at the top of the Super League.

Almani Moreira was typically influential, playing a major role in the build-up to Diarra’s opener on four minutes. Red Star evened the match when Srda Knezevic inadvertently diverted the ball past his own goalkeeper two minutes before half time, but Brazilian forward Cleo, who Partizan signed having played on-loan at Red Star last season, scored what would prove to be the winner with a superb curling shot on the hour mark.

If Almeida keeps this up, not only should he be at a better club, but he should also be a starter at striker for portugal.
