Injury has shelved hopes of Chelsea move, says Zenit's Danny

Portuguese targets quick recovery

DannyZenit Saint Petersburg midfielder Danny admits that his forthcoming operation is a huge blow, especially as he had been attracting major interest from some of the continent’s top clubs ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 25-year-old will undergo surgery next week and is likely to be out of action for four months, meaning he will miss most of the remainder of the Russian season, which has over two thirds of the campaign left to play.

The setback is also likely to put a hold on any hopes the Venezuela-born playmaker had of moving west during the European close season. Spanish giants Real Madrid were thought to be following the player closely during the January transfer window, while Danny himself revealed that English club Chelsea had been in contact before his injury.

“I am not going to lie, the interest in me may stop now because I am injured,” Danny said. “But there is only a week left of the season in Europe and the truth is I had an offer from Chelsea which made a transfer to England distinctly possible. I also have offers from Italy. Mourinho? I don’t know if he was thinking about me.

“I feel enormous frustration and sadness. It is my first serious injury and it stops me from doing what I enjoy, which is to play football. I just have to watch television and it is very tough. Now I must put in 100% to return as quickly as possible.

“Now, with regards to Chelsea we will have to wait and see. They know my valuation but it all depends on how it goes after the operation. I have a very good agent and we are going to wait on that. It is a big challenge to show my worth in England or Italy. But first I have another challenge: to get back to 100 percent.”

Another aspect of the link to Chelsea has seen Ricardo Quaresma, currently on-loan at Stamford Bridge, suggested as a potential replacement for Danny, and the current Zenit man fully backs the idea. “I think that Quaresma would be a good signing. He is a great player who can decide a game, which is what Zenit are looking for in my position.”
