Video: Outstanding Danny bags brace in Zenit win

Portuguese international Danny scored twice to help Russian champions Zenit come from behind to beat Rubin Kazan and return to form after back-to-back recent defeats.

Zenit were beaten 4-2 at Jose Couceiro’s Lokomotiv Moscow last weekend, and opened their Champions League campaign with a surprise 2-1 defeat to APOEL in Cyprus on Tuesday. The poor form looked likely to continue in Kazan on Sunday afternoon, after the hosts took a 2-0 lead through Bibras Natcho (8’) and Sergey Kislyak (23’).

However, Roman Shirokov halved the deficit ahead of half time, before Danny took centre stage in the second period. First, the ex-Sporting man received the ball on the edge of the box and beat Sergei Ryzhikov with a tidy finish (50’), before completing Zenit’s comeback by starting and finishing a superb counter-attacking move (68’) to keep the champions 2 points clear at the top of the Premier League. Bruno Alves also played for Zenit.








Meanwhile, Lokomotiv Moscow continued their recent good form under Jose Couceiro with a 4-0 victory at Terek Grozny. Manuel da Costa started in defence for Lokomotiv, who won for the fourth consecutive match and find themselves in 4th place in the table, seven points adrift of Zenit.

Da Costa cleared of sexual assault

Former Portugal under-21 international da Costa was on Saturday cleared of sexual assault following a trial in London. The charge stemmed from an incident that took place during the 25-year-old’s time playing for West Ham United. Da Costa was forced, however, to pay a fine, having admitted to slapping a woman in a London nightclub.

It is truely amazing that everyone, and I mean everyone realizes that Danny is an Attacking Mid, expect the Seleccao. I say the Seleccao (including FPF), because the way he's been treated reeks more than just plain stupidity.

I was critical of Bento when he was hired, and will continue to be. Yes, he has won, but I think that everyone can agree that the player themselves have worked/played harder. Tactically, I haven't seen much difference than CQ, except for the defensive substitutions.
I don't even have to go into the stupidity of the Carvalho incident.

I'm happy for Danny, and I hope that he is given a chance to play his natural position with the Seleccao. By "chance", I mean more than a game.

Again a amazing performance by Danny, is Paulo Bento watching because he should be our attacking midfielder, in a Deco/Rui Costa type role...Hes the man, I hope he starts for Portugal in the right postion not on the wing!

Danny is a midfielder NOT a winger, my only dismay with your 11 is that Alves has replaced Carvalho, my heart has not given up on him yet

I personally believe that the Alves/Pepe combination is solid
in terms of physicality, however where is the brains of the combo. Carvalho was the CB playmaker regathering balls and starting counter attacks with quick transitions out of defence which he does for Real Madrid and did for Chelsea. Manuel Da Costa is of a similar mold of Carvalho but a little more athletic, if his head is screwed on he is has the ability to be world class IMO.

Now this is what Danny can do when he is played as a midfielder. I really hope Paulo Bento was watching, because Danny is what our Seleccao desperately needs. He is extremely quick, skillfull, and creative. He could work wonders right bechind either Almeida or Postiga. When playing against a stubborn defense, creativity in midfield is extremely important, and Danny is an excellent player, so why not play him there.

Against Iceland we should use this 11
