Meira heads to Zenit in 6m euro deal

Portuguese ends spell in Turkey

MeiraFernando Meira is to sign for Russian side Zenit Saint Petersburg, after the Uefa Cup holders finally agreed a fee with Turkish champions Galatasaray for the defender.

Zenit have been in negotiations for the 30-year-old for around a month, having made Meira a primary target in the build-up to the news Russian Premier League season. An initial offer of 4.5m euros was rejected by Gala, but according to media outlet NTVSpor, the clubs have now agreed a transfer fee in the region of 6m Euros.

Meira’s stay at the Ali Sami Yen has been an unhappy one, having made the move to Turkey from Stuttgart last summer. The champions have struggled defensively all season, with fans pointing the blame at the Guimaraes man for their team’s lapses at the back, particularly after Meira made a costly mistake in the Uefa Cup against Bordeaux.

The Portuguese has agreed personal terms with the Russians, where he will be joined by fellow international Danny, who has been at Zenit since last summer’s record-breaking move from Dinamo Moscow.

Zenit, who finished a disappointing 5th in Russia last season, having been champions the previous season, begin their assault on the new campaign on Sunday with a trip to Spartak Moscow.
