Danny back with a bang
Solo goal from Portuguese gives Zenit winning start
PortugalEarlier in the week the skilful 26-year-old had spoken of his ambitions of earning a place in the Carlos Queiroz’s World Cup squad, and the importance of showing good form in the new Russian season to do so.
The former Sporting player could hardly have had a more positive start. Zenit won their opening match of the season at Krylya Sovietov 1-0 thanks to Danny’s 66th-minute strike.
Picking up the ball in his own half, Danny’s speed and skill allowed him to lead a rapid counter-attack, jink past his marker and fire a firm cross-shot beyond the goalkeeper for the all-important goal. Watch goal by clicking on the screen below:
Danny has played eight times for the Seleccao and scored one goal, and was a regular in Queiroz’s squad before suffering a serious knee injury in May 2009.

Quieroz has done some shocking things in the past, who knows, maybe he'll still call him up?
He wont be great in a central solitary striker role, but is an excellent option off the bench and could play well as a second striker. He also is great as an attacking midfielder or as a winger. A player with this versatility should be called up for the world cup.
