Danny back with a bang

Solo goal from Portuguese gives Zenit winning start

DannyPortugal international Danny marked his comeback from a long injury absence in spectacular style with a fine individual goal to give Zenit Saint-Petersburg victory in the first game of the new Russian league season.

Earlier in the week the skilful 26-year-old had spoken of his ambitions of earning a place in the Carlos Queiroz’s World Cup squad, and the importance of showing good form in the new Russian season to do so.

The former Sporting player could hardly have had a more positive start. Zenit won their opening match of the season at Krylya Sovietov 1-0 thanks to Danny’s 66th-minute strike.

Picking up the ball in his own half, Danny’s speed and skill allowed him to lead a rapid counter-attack, jink past his marker and fire a firm cross-shot beyond the goalkeeper for the all-important goal. Watch goal by clicking on the screen below:

Danny has played eight times for the Seleccao and scored one goal, and was a regular in Queiroz’s squad before suffering a serious knee injury in May 2009.

I dont care who else plays as long as Liedson is up top with Danny behind him, and with Ronaldo and Varela on the wings.
Good Option

Danny can certainly be an option for the midfield if he can play well and stay healthy over the next 3 months. He can provide a shot in the arm into that attacking midfield, and as said before he was a regular for Queiroz, and he showed some quality
weak midfield

Deco and Tiago do not have what it takes. The midfield needs more creativity and or explosiveness. If Tiago, Meireles, and Deco see alot of playing time Portugal will repeat the embarrassment of the Euro 2008 knockout stage.
danny

aaaa
yes we have deco and tiago but danny is still better than both of the tiago is way to slow and takes 1 hour to decide if hes gonna shoot or pass
Don't Count Danny Out

I would not 100% count out Danny getting a place on the NT. When healthy he is one of the top players playing outside Portugal. There are few Portuguese players with his quality. He was on the way to the EPL before his injury. If he has a good 2-3 month spell you never know.
danny for nt

No more space for danny? Do you see what he can offer? Tiago could never and will never be able to do that…deco hadsnt played all year and doesn't care anymore...danny,micael,and moutinho deserve their shot...they are hungry and bring energy into the game and when you play with ronaldo that's what you need not two guys who will slow down your counter/attack.
I wish there were more time...

All he needs is some time. I'd still like to see him go to South Africa honestly. I think he'd still be better than Micael because he's at least had some time with the Seleccao in the past.
Quieroz has done some shocking things in the past, who knows, maybe he'll still call him up?
great player

I hope Danny has an excellent season and impresses Queiroz. I think he is a better option than Makukula because he has a lot more experience in big games. Makukula is very similar to Almeida, but Almeida is a better player so I think Queiroz should chose 3 forwards with different qualities. Liedson, the finisher. Almeida, the strong and powerful striker, and Danny the skillfull secong striker.

He wont be great in a central solitary striker role, but is an excellent option off the bench and could play well as a second striker. He also is great as an attacking midfielder or as a winger. A player with this versatility should be called up for the world cup.
Good player

Danny is great but the team is pretty much decided. We have Deco, Tiago, for the attack and Ruben Micael (if he gets called). I just dont think there is any more space for Danny unfortunately.
