Player Profile: Daniel Fernandes

Daniel Fernandes
Full name: Daniel Márcio Fernandes
Position: Goalkeeper
Date of Birth: 25 September 1983
Birthplace: Edmonton, Canada

Canadian-born goalkeeper Daniel Fernandes is one of a number of emerging Portuguese players to have forged his career largely outside the country. Porto signed the giant goalkeeper to their youth academy in 2000, but after failing to make the grade with the Portuguese giants, Fernandes spent time in Spain and Germany before making his way to PAOK Thessaloniki in Greece in 2003.

It was with PAOK that Fernandes, who was born in Edmonton, finally began to flourish, spending five years at the club and impressing enough to earn his first international cap in 2007.

A move to Germany and VFL Bochum followed in the summer of 2008, with the switch to the Bundesliga coming just before Fernandes’ 25th birthday, giving him the platform to progress and establish himself as one of the leading candidates for the Portugal no.1 shirt.

However, despite securing his status as Bochum’s number one during his first season in Germany, Fernandes soon found himself out of favour at the club. Having made just one league appearance at the halfway stage of the 2009/10 campaign, the goalkeeper opted for a loan move back to Greece with Iraklis.

Returning to his previous home of Thessaloniki, Fernandes made the switch with the firm intention of securing enough first-team football to earn a place in Carlos Queiroz’s squad for South Africa

I'd be really surprised if he makes the WC team.........which is surprising to say because it wasn't that long ago that he was considered an automatic for the number 3 (aka young goalie of the future) spot. Today that spot is Rui Patricio's to lose. I'm guessing that the question he will be thinking for the next 10 years will be whether it was worth it taking the chance to be Portugal's #3 with a chance to be the #1 someday or to have declared for Canada a few years back & quite possibly already be Canada's #1 today or real soon in the future. Tough call any way you look at it.
