Player Profile: Jose Moreira

Jose MoreiraFull name: Jose Filipe da Silva Moreira

Position: Goalkeeper

Date of Birth: 20 March 1982

Birthplace: Massarelos, Portugal

Benfica goalkeeper Moreira was hailed as Portugal’s future goalkeeper from a young age, but a series of injuries have hampered his chances of fulfilling that prophecy. Despite being in and out of Benfica’s side over recent seasons, Moreira retains huge popularity among the club’s supporters, most of whom consider him Benfica’s true number one.

As a child Moreira wanted to play as a striker, but his father convinced him that he stood out between the pipes. Just as his father predicted, he excelled as the last line of defence for Salgueiros youths, and Benfica had no second thoughts in signing the player in 1997, although he remained at the northern club for another two years.

At just 17 Moreira joined Benfica full time as back-up for then goalkeeper, Robert Enke. But he would have to wait until 2001 to make his official debut, against Vitoria Guimaraes, when he replaced the injured Enke.

The goalkeeper enjoyed a solid start as the match ended scoreless and Moreira played a further 10 games for Benfica that season. However, it would be the following year that the young shot-stopper would lay claim to Benfica’s number 1 shirt.

Breakthrough season

In 2002/03 Moreira featured in 31 games for the Eagles, earning acclaim for his assured performances and excellent shot-stopping although his fine displays were not translated into trophies. The following campaign saw Moreira debut in Europe in the Uefa Cup, and he also lifted the Portuguese Cup as the club broke a drought of almost a decade without silverware.

Although Moreira played 14 times at the start of the championship winning 2004/05 season, the year marked the start of difficult times for the keeper. He lost his position to Portugal international Quim after a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Belenenses.

The next two seasons were bitterly disappointing as Moreira not only had to compete with Quim and Moretto, who was signed from Setubal in January of 2005, but he also suffered a serious injury to his right knee, forcing him out of action for several months.

When fit again, Fernando Santos was reluctant to pick Moreira ahead of either Quim or Moretto. However Santos then appeared to have a change of heart that saw Moreira back in favour as Moretto was sold and speculation surrounded Quim’s future.

But in the summer of 2007, just when it seemed Moreira was set become Benfica’s first-choice goalkeeper again, he suffered another injury, this time to his left knee, and was forced back to the operating table. He is expected to be out until mid-season, when he will fight to repay the faith shown in him by the Benfica fans as he strives to reclaim the number one shirt for the Eagles.
