Raphael Guerreiro and Tiago Gomes also make squad

Portugal coach Fernando Santos has again shown he is prepared to pick from a broad pool of players - in sharp contrast to his predecessor Paulo Bento - with call-ups for José Bosingwa, Raphael Guerreiro and Tiago Gomes.

The defenders are drafted in owing to injuries ruling out Portugal's three first-choice left-backs, Coentrão, Eliseu and Antunes.

There is also a recall for striker Hélder Postiga for the Euro 2016 qualifier against Armenia and the friendly international against Argentina.

Options explained

Former Porto and Chelsea full-back Bosingwa, who can play on the right or the left, had his international career abruptly cut short in similar fashion to Ricardo Carvalho after falling out with Paulo Bento. Santos recalled Carvalho in his first Portugal squad and the Monaco centre-back responded with a magnificent man-of-the-match performance helping the Seleção gain a crucial win in Denmark. Santos will be hoping it's a similar story with Bosingwa.

"I swapped Ivo Pinto for Bosingwa to give a little more experience to the squad. He has started in his team's last seven games, he's played in European competitions and he's a very experienced player. He's been a Seleção player and he can bring positive things," said Santos.

Santos also gave his reasoning behind the call-ups of young left-backs Raphael Guerreiro and Tiago Gomes, both debutants at senior level. "Raphael has been progressing very well and I've received very good information about him. As for Tiago Gomes, he was involved with the national team until U-20 level and he has been a regular for Braga."

Armenia warning

The veteran coach said all his focus was on the Armenia qualifier, which will be played at the Estádio do Algarve one week today on Friday 14 November.

"The Armenia game is decisive for us. The victory against Denmark will only be worth it if we beat Armenia," he said. "We have to be well prepared because it won't be an easy match; it will be a tough one. This team were winning in Denmark until the 74th minute and against Serbia only let in an equaliser at the end.

"I've got every confidence in these players to win the game, but it will be necessary to run hard, work hard and play a great game. It's fundamental we beat Armenia. I'm counting on having the fans on our side and I believe the Portuguese public will fill the Estádio do Algarve, which has not held a competitive Seleção game for 10 years."

Portugal are currently in third place in Group I having lost one (at home to Albania) and won one (away to Denmark) of their games so far, but are only one point behind leaders Denmark.

Never was a fan of Bosingwa, and I don't know how they figured his ability to play left-back (he's a righty) but how in the world did Coentrao, Antunes, and Eliseu get injured at the same time?! Apparently Raphael Guerreiro is a left-back but haven't been following him and there doesn't seem to be a better option at this moment. Bruno Alves needs to be dropped for Paulo Oliveira.

The rest of the team looks fine including Postiga who is 10x better than Eder. If Postiga could regain just a little bit of speed, he'd be an automatic starter. He can finish chances a lot better than Danny.

Wonderful selections. I'm not keen on Bosingwa, but the only reason he's there is because of all of Portugal's injured left backs (Coentrao, Antunes, Eliseu, Silvio), and Guerreiro is a great choice I'm a big fan of his. I hope he starts over Bosingwa. Would also like to see Fonte feature in the friendly at least. He's a great defender. I imagine Pepe and Carvalho keep their momentum going, but Fonte is such an underrated defender and leader. We know what we're going to get from Postiga but unfortunately no other options exist. We'll give it some time to see how Fonte and Andre Silva pan out, but until then Postiga and Eder it is. On the bright side, Hugo Almeida is currently playing in Serie A for Cesena and Fernando Santos did not call him up. Smart man. Força Portugal. I have faith in Santos.

Orlando Sa is killing it for legia. 7 goals in 11 games . He doesn't even get a whiff of the seleccao. For me the eder experiment is over. He hasn't scored in 15 games now. Postiga is not the answer either.

What happened to bruma. The guy is electric.
prandelli refuses to play him. They probably
want to make sure he doesn't get injured before January transfer. It might ruin their payday.

Nelson Oliveira and Bebe are collecting dust at benfica. What a shame. Bebe was really building some momentum at pacos. I hope they get loaned out at some point . They need playING time.

    Midfield looks good.
Moutinho no longer an automatic starter.

    Pepe fonte Carvalho an tunes,
Cedric, guerreiro (great young lb) and my man fabio c. Make for formidable defensive unit for now

The pipeline is full of young talent.

Future is bright for Portuguese football

What we are seeing is a coach who understands that there is a gap with our talented, but very young group that is emerging. He needs to squeeze another couple of years out of players like Tiago, Carvalho, Bosingwa, and Postiga, while our young player mature. I know everyone wants to see Bruma, Rony Lopes, Carlos Mane, Rafa, Bruno fernandes, Joao Cancello, Tiago ilori, Edgar le, Ruben vezo, andre Silva, Guedes, but they are not ready. Joao Mario, Andre Gomes, William, and Cedric, are on the team because their ready. At the end of the day, all that matter is that we continue to win. If we continue to win, then the coach is make the correct choices. Forca

  • While I'm not a fan of seeing old names like Postiga or Bosingaw come up. However I felt the same way about Carvalho but after this week's match in Lisboa, he ran a full 90 as if he was a CB in his prime. Maybe at his age he's realized this is his last chance at playing top level footie and is giving everything in his matches. I hope he can keep this up until the 2016 euro, or it's all a waste using him.

I do like hearing names like Guerreiro which I know little of but in doing some research he's playing regularly in Ligue 1. Considering that he was born in France and never has had a senior cap for Portugal. To me this shows that Santos is thinking long term to keep his options open and to prevent France from capping this kid one day. He's already given some other new kids a chance and this is the part I'm liking most about Santos.

As for the striker position, we just don't have the proper world class striker. I agree with the comment that other's made on using a false 9 as we have so many world class mid-fielders/wingers we can call on. Despite Bento giving us the worst start possible, with Serbia and Albania likely seeing point deductions, we shouldn't have too much of an issue qualifying without the need for play-offs. This will give Santo's the ability to keep calling up different players to find the right mix for 2016.

Not a big fan of Bosingwa, but what about this lineup considering we dont have a pure #9
    Patricio
    Carvalho,Pepe, Fonte
Tiago,W.Carvalho, Joao Mario, Danny(Coentrao when healthy)
    Nani, Ronaldo, Quaresma

    nani,

I would love to see Carrico get a chance in the future. he's been a regular in Sevillas successful team. Also Bebe needs to be given a chance instead of Postiga or Eder. Bebe can be a good No. 9 for us.

Like the other posters here not a fan of Bosingwa. This guy is the true maca podre. Outside of Porto this guy has no positive stays for club. Remember his disaster at QPR?

Not much experienced options tho given the injuries and remember he DID play as LB, RB and even at CB a few times for Chelsea (also last resort). Hoping Raphael Guerreiro gets the start and the king of the unibrow only plays as a last resort option. Bosingwa is just too much of a wild card, you might get a man of the match of a red card in the first 5 minutes...

My head says its a smart move, but my heart says he is a jerk. I would love to see Raphael Guerreiro play as he is a player we really dont see much of.

I think the Boswinga call up is part of Santos rebuilding the Selecao. With Bento it became real personal with some players, Carvalho and Boswinga. Quaresma probably wasn't very happy either and maybe even Thiago Mendes. This signals to all Portuguese players you are welcome if you can help the team. I am not sure the Boswinga can, but experience on the bench doesn't hurt. Once a again he is bringing in new faces and gets to see and meet them up close. One thing that I do think Santos might be able to do is help develop the young players. For a lot of players the National team is a way to get exposure and grow there careers.

Saw Guerreiro play in the under 21's. Was a mixed bag, but if he can cut out some defensive mistakes, he definitely has upside potential. Time to cap Marcos Lopes, before he becomes too good and Brazil wants him. I don't know if he would play for them, but no need to chance it. I still remember Marquinos being open to play for Portugal.

One of the things that I think Santos brings is his international perspective. He is familiar with some back water leagues were there are good prospective talents. Never had heard of Ivo Pinto, but Santos is familiar with the eastern European leagues and brought him in.
