Man Utd boss Ferguson defends Bebe against “vicious attacks” from media“He did not deserve that” Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has denied reports that new Portuguese signing Bebe has struggled to impress since moving to Old Trafford, following suggestions that the club have been unhappy with the player’s performances in training.
Several English newspapers picked up on a story that claimed the 20-year-old arrival from Vitoria Guimaraes had not displayed the required technical ability during his first training sessions, leading to Bebe being left out of a reserve team match against Manchester City on Wednesday. However, Ferguson is frustrated with the reports and insists that fitness is the only thing holding the Portuguese back. "Bebe is on a programme doing endurance work because his fitness levels are not near the ones we are at," said Ferguson. "Other than that he has done well. I know he has had a couple of vicious attacks on him for why he wasn't playing in the reserve game but he was never going to be playing. "The attack was a case of vengeance from journalists who are banned from here and took the opportunity. It was disgusting. The boy did not deserve that. He is a young man trying to make his way in football. They didn't need to do that. It was a really bitter attack. Ability-wise he is excellent. He is a terrific finisher. "We have been very impressed with that. It is just the fitness levels he needs to get to." By Sean Gillen Keep up to date with all the latest news on Portuguese football with the PortuGOAL Twitter!
