Valladolid's Portuguese players
Pele (born September 14, 1987)
Portuguese under-21 midfielder Pele used the 2007 Toulon Tournament and subsequent U-20 World Cup in Canada to make a name for himself and earn a move to Italian champions Internazionale. The talented youngster had previously been building his career with Vitoria Guimaraes, having been released by Benfica in 2005 when he was 17.
Although Pele showed glimpses of his undoubted ability under Roberto Mancini in Milan, replacement manager Jose Mourinho was prepared to let the midfielder go as part of the deal which saw Ricardo Quaresma arrive from Porto.
Pele struggled to make an impact on his return to Portugal, and Porto agreed to loan him out to Portsmouth for the remainder of the 2008/09 season, where the player again found playing time difficult to come by. On his return to Porto, another spell abroad was agreed, with the 21-year-old moving to Spain to join Real Valladolid for the 2009/10 campaign.
Henrique Sereno (born May 18, 1985)
Henrique Sereno joined Valladolid on a short-term contract in January 2010 from Vitoria Guimaraes, having been widely expected to sign for FC Porto. The tall central defender had been in impressive form with Vitoria during the 2009/10 campaign, leading to widespread interest in his services. Moving to Spain on a five-month deal, Sereno gave himself time to assess his options ahead a possible further move in the summer.
