Scolari announces Euro 2008 squad: Maniche out, brother Jorge in

Brazilian goes for mixture of youth and experience

Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has disclosed the squad he will take with him to the European Championships to be held in Austria & Switzerland in less than a month’s time.

“I have total confidence in my choices and the capacities of these athletes,” said Scolari. “The expectation level is the same as it was in Euro 2004 which is to have a good team that is competitive and who know how to represent the nation with dignity. They must respect their adversaries, but still be confident as we have great quality.” >>

Euro 2008 is fast approaching. Portugal play on the opening day against Turkey on 7 June, and head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is feeling confident of the team’s chances in lifting the championship.

“Euro 2004 was an important time for Portugal as it allowed the team to become more competitive. Portugal have more confidence than ever,” Scolari told FIFA Magazine. “The Portuguese national team is stronger mentally – we continue to rank among the best national teams in the world.” >>

Portugal continued their poor recent form as they were well beaten by their Euro 2004 nemesis Greece in a friendly match played in Dusseldorf, Germany last night.

The Greek’s superiority throughout was translated into two masterfully executed free-kicks from former Benfica midfielder Karagounis. Nuno Gomes hit a late consolation for Portugal. >>

Portuguese defender Jorge Andrade is set to undergo another operation on his knee, ruling him out of contention for a place in Luiz Felipe Scolari’s plans for this summer’s European Championships.

It is a cruel blow for the Lisbon native – a likely starter alongside Ricardo Carvalho in central defence if fit – who also missed out on Portugal’s 2006 World Cup campaign in Germany with his last injury. >>
