Bosingwa gets Portugal recall

Bosingwa gets Portugal recall

Raphael Guerreiro and Tiago Gomes also make squad

Portugal coach Fernando Santos has again shown he is prepared to pick from a broad pool of players - in sharp contrast to his predecessor Paulo Bento - with call-ups for José Bosingwa, Raphael Guerreiro and Tiago Gomes.

The defenders are drafted in owing to injuries ruling out Portugal's three first-choice left-backs, Coentrão, Eliseu and Antunes.

There is also a recall for striker Hélder Postiga for the Euro 2016 qualifier against Armenia and the friendly international against Argentina.

Options explained

Former Porto and Chelsea full-back Bosingwa, who can play on the right or the left, had his international career abruptly cut short in similar fashion to Ricardo Carvalho after falling out with Paulo Bento. Santos recalled Carvalho in his first Portugal squad and the Monaco centre-back responded with a magnificent man-of-the-match performance helping the Seleção gain a crucial win in Denmark. Santos will be hoping it's a similar story with Bosingwa.

"I swapped Ivo Pinto for Bosingwa to give a little more experience to the squad. He has started in his team's last seven games, he's played in European competitions and he's a very experienced player. He's been a Seleção player and he can bring positive things," said Santos.

Santos also gave his reasoning behind the call-ups of young left-backs Raphael Guerreiro and Tiago Gomes, both debutants at senior level. "Raphael has been progressing very well and I've received very good information about him. As for Tiago Gomes, he was involved with the national team until U-20 level and he has been a regular for Braga."

Armenia warning

The veteran coach said all his focus was on the Armenia qualifier, which will be played at the Estádio do Algarve one week today on Friday 14 November.

"The Armenia game is decisive for us. The victory against Denmark will only be worth it if we beat Armenia," he said. "We have to be well prepared because it won't be an easy match; it will be a tough one. This team were winning in Denmark until the 74th minute and against Serbia only let in an equaliser at the end.

"I've got every confidence in these players to win the game, but it will be necessary to run hard, work hard and play a great game. It's fundamental we beat Armenia. I'm counting on having the fans on our side and I believe the Portuguese public will fill the Estádio do Algarve, which has not held a competitive Seleção game for 10 years."

Portugal are currently in third place in Group I having lost one (at home to Albania) and won one (away to Denmark) of their games so far, but are only one point behind leaders Denmark.
