Sporting secure Champions League football; Guimaraes make history

Pacos de Ferreira sunk by last-minute equaliser

Sporting, Guimaraes and Benfica all finished the season with home wins to leave the top of the table unchanged. As such the Lions qualify directly for next season’s Champions League, along with FC Porto, while Guimaraes will play the final qualifying round in August in an attempt to get into the competition proper.

At the other end of the table Pacos de Ferreira conceded a last-minute equaliser at Leiria to finish in penultimate place, condemning them to relegation. However, Pacos may be given a lifeline. If Boavista’s appeal against their relegation on corruption charges fails, Jose Mota’s side will see their top-flight status retained.

Sporting close in on Champions League qualification

Guimaraes and Benfica drop points

Yannick Djalo

A single first-half goal from Yannick Djalo (pictured) gave Sporting a crucial 1-0 win at Pacos de Ferreira to leave the Lions well placed to secure automatic qualification to the Champions League next season. Paulo Bento’s team need a draw in their last match at home to Boavista next weekend to guarantee a second-place finish.

Benfica and Guimaraes both dropped points drawing away to Estrela da Amadora (0-0) and Belenenses (1-1) respectively. The northerners are now favourites to finish third and thus enter the final qualifying round for the Champions League in August.

As for the Uefa Cup, home victories for Setubal and Maritimo sent both teams into next year’s competition. At the other end of the table, Pacos de Ferreira and Leixoes take their fight to avoid relegation into the final weekend of the season.
