Sensational Leixoes stun Sporting to stand firm in top spot

Benfica and FC Porto win

Roberto Sousa

A long-range goal from Roberto Sousa (pictured) in the second half proved enough for Leixoes to beat Sporting at Alvalade and continue their sensational start to the season.

Benfica stayed just one point behind the leaders and opened up a four-point gap to third place with a single-goal victory over troubled Estrela da Amadora at the Estadio da Luz. FC Porto look to be back on song after an impressive 2-0 home victory over Guimaraes made it three wins in a row.

Leixoes continue on a crest of a wave

David Suazo

Benfica produced an excellent first-half display and a battling second 45 minutes after being reduced to ten men to grab a 2-1 victory at Guimaraes last night. David Suazo (pictured) and Sidnei scored the goals for the Eagles, with Douglas on the mark for the hosts.

Top of the pile remain Leixoes, who continued their sensational start to the season with a 2-1 home triumph over Pacos de Ferreira. Elsewhere the Academica-Braga and Estrela da Amadora-Belenenses matches ended in 1-1 draws.

FC Porto slide continues

Dragons slump to defeat at Naval; Sporting beat Rio Ave

Portuguese champions FC Porto slipped to their third consecutive defeat yesterday, going down 1-0 at Naval. It was the first time the club from Figueira da Foz had beaten the Dragons in their history, and the result piles more pressure on Porto boss Jesualdo Ferreira.

Sporting took full advantage by beating Rio Ave 1-0 away to move into second place, at least temporarily. Once again Liedson was the match-winner for the Lions.
