Win tickets to see Ronaldo and Pepe in El Clásico

Portugal’s chances of success at Euro 2016 undoubtedly depend to a large extent on how talismanic captain Cristiano Ronaldo and stalwart defender Pepe perform in France.

PortuGOAL readers have the chance to check out the form of the two Real Madrid stars in person, by entering the Anyoption-hosted El Clásico competition.

The winner of the competition receives round-trip airfare, a luxurious hotel stay, and VIP tickets to El Clásico in Barcelona on the weekend of 2 April. Five of the runners-up will receive an official jersey of the team of your choice.

Incredible as it may seem, some of Ronaldo’s detractors insist on the theory that “he doesn’t do it in the big games”.  Well, they don’t get much bigger than the clash between the two Spanish giants and Ronaldo’s record in the fixture speaks for itself.

The 30-year-old Real Madrid superstar has netted 13 times against Barcelona in 27 matches, not to mention the small matter of 15 assists.

It should not be forgotten that Barça have dominated club football during that time. Some argue Pep Guardiola’s side were the best club side ever, while many football analysts are now claiming the current side and reigning Champions League holders are even better.

Memorable year

Nevertheless, Barcelona is one of the sides Ronaldo has scored most goals against. To see a video compilation of his goals against his fiercest rivals, click here. In 2012 Ronaldo scored in six consecutive games against Barça, including the winner that sealed the La Liga title for José Mourinho’s side in a 2-1 win at the Camp Nou.

Pepe is another player who is often unfairly derided by the press. But Pepe’s “pantomime villain” image and belligerent style of play should not detract from what a fine defender he is, with excellent positional sense and anticipation allied to surprising speed for such a tall and burly player.

His wholehearted attitude whenever donning a Portugal shirt has made him a big favourite among Seleção fans. He may have been let down by his fiery temperament at the 2014 World Cup, but he has otherwise been superb for the national team.

Despite being born in Brazil, his commitment to the cause is absolute, and even stretches to a more than passable rendition of the Portuguese national anthem.

Barcelona look certain to tie up the 2015/16 La Liga title, but Real Madrid will be as keen as ever to get one over their old rivals before the season is out. A positive result for Real and good performances from their Portuguese duo will leave Ronaldo and Pepe in good heart ahead of this summer’s European Championship.
