Portuguese players scored in all five of Europe’s major leagues this weekend, with the pick of the bunch coming through Bruno Fernandes’ stunning free-kick as Manchester United and Bournemouth played out the game of the season so far in the Premier League.
Fernandes’ free-kick at Old Trafford made it 3-3, with match ending 4-4 as the Red Devils showed promise but once again dropped points at home. Many came away from the Theatre of Dreams believing it was possibly the best attacking performance of Amorim’s tenure, but lapses in defence proved costly as United missed out of the chance to move up to 5th place and were forced to settle for 6th in the Premier League.

Mateus Fernandes goal in vain
Another Fernandes, West Ham United’s Mateus, was also on the scoresheet this weekend in the Premier League. Whilst the goal was in vain as Nuno Espírito Santo’s side were beaten 3-2 at home by high-flying Aston Villa, there was personal accomplishment as Fernandes’ opener is the quickest in the league so far this season.
At 29 seconds, Fernandes’ effort in applying pressure was rewarded with the earliest goal on record of the campaign so far. It was former Sporting man Fernandes’ second goal of the season for West Ham, where he is becoming an increasingly impressive performer under Nuno in the capital.

Two goals in two games for Ramos
Gonçalo Ramos scored for the second consecutive week in France’s Ligue 1, getting the opener in the European champions’ 3-2 win at Metz. Ramos, who struck in last weekend’s victory over Rennes, made it 40 goals for the Parisiens, coming in his 108th appearance for the club – many of which have been as substitute.

Vitinha shows class in Italy
Another Portuguese striker to find the net in a major league this week is former Braga striker Vitinha, who scored a nicely-taken goal for Genoa against title-contenders Internazionale in Italy. Unfortunately for Vitinha, the result did not repay his moment of quality, with Genoa edged out 2-1 at home by the Nerazzurri.

Braga scores again as Hearts increase lead in Scotland
Surprise leaders Heart of Midlothian moved six points clear of champions Celtic in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday, taking advantage of their rivals’ appearance in the League Cup final to increase the gap at the top, having played two games more than the Glasgow giants. Portuguese forward Cláudio Braga scored in their victory at Celtic last week, and he added another in the weekend’s 2-0 win at Falkirk to become the joint-top scorer in the SPL on 8 goals.

Guedes growing in form in Spain
Gonçalo Guedes is finding some nice goalscoring form in Spanish football, despite the floundering performances of his team Real Sociedad. Guedes scored against Girona on Friday evening to make it 3 goals in his last 6 matches for Sociedad, but his exploits did not help manager Sergio Fernandez avoid the sack after three straight defeats.
