Afonso Moreira has proved himself one of the emerging stars of the French Ligue 1 season with Olympique Lyonnais. Therefore, it comes as no surprise the Portuguese is attracting interest from a host of clubs across Europe.

Moreira joined Lyon from Sporting for just €2m last summer, with a sell-on clause included, and the deal is widely regarded as one of the bargains of the season in France. Moreira, 21, has registered an impressive 18 goal involvements across all competitions this season, carving out a reputation as one of the league’s most exciting wide attackers.

Lyon’s 4-2 win over Rennes at the weekend included Moreira’s latest goal, putting Paulo Fonseca’s side in the driving seat for a Champions League spot heading into the last two matches. With a trip to Toulouse and a final day home clash against Lens still to play, Lyon hold a two-point advantage over Lille in the race for 3rd place and qualification for Europe’s premier club competition.

According to renowned French publication L’Equipe, Moreira’s form has led to an approach to extend his contract, which was signed for five years last summer. Interest in Moreira is growing, with Premier League sides Chelsea and Newcastle considered admirers, while Bundesliga clubs are reported to be following his situation.

L’Equipe believe an agreement to extend Moreira’s stay beyond the current 2030 duration is settled, with the Portugal man already considered a key part of Fonseca’s plans. Moreira narrowly missed out on being named Lyon’s Player of the Month for April, racking up 46% of the votes for the award, which went to goalkeeper Dominik Grief with a 47% share.

The paper labels Moreira “the revelation of the season” and states that his valuation has “skyrocketed” since he was given his chance in the early autumn following a serious injury to Malick Fofana. Moreira’s effectiveness in the final third is matched by his work in his own half, with his tireless work rate and defensive contributions massively admired by those at Lyon.

Moreira himself is believed to be eager to put pen to paper, with the prospect of enhancing his skills in next season’s Champions League an added incentive to continue his development under Fonseca’s watch. Indeed, during an interview with L’Equipe last month, the Portugal under-21 international specified the importance of testing himself against the continent’s elite.

“I’m very happy here, ” he said in an interview published on April 25. “I want to reach the Champions League with Lyon, because it’s important for the club and for me too, that’s very clear. To reach it, and then to play in it.”
