Dean Henderson vs Jordan Pickford: who should be England’s number one at the 2026 World Cup?

Along with Portugal, England are one of the favourites to go deep in the upcoming 2026 World Cup. While Roberto Martínez and the Seleção have some conundrums to work out in terms of personnel ahead of the big kick-off, the same is true of other major nations at the tournament.

For almost a decade, Jordan Pickford has been England’s go-to goalkeeper. Tournament after tournament, he’s delivered when it counts, building a reputation as someone who performs on the biggest stage.

But as England look ahead to the 2026 World Cup, that certainty is being questioned – not just in debate and analysis, but in the shifting betting odds that reflect how wide open this conversation has become.

Dean Henderson’s resurgence at club level has reopened a debate that once felt settled. Strong performances, increasing responsibility and mounting evidence have brought the question back: should England stick with experience, or is it time for a change?

Jordan Pickford

Pickford has started every major tournament match since the 2018 World Cup and has rarely let England down when it counts. His performances in knockout football, particularly in penalty shootouts, have been central to England’s recent tournament runs.

At club level, his role at Everton puts him under sustained pressure. Everton concede territory, shots, and crosses, meaning Pickford is regularly tested in high-volume, high-stress situations. That context is worth considering when judging his numbers.

Statistically, he performs strongly in post-shot expected goals, often conceding fewer goals than models predict. His reflexes, one-on-one defending, and ability to stay mentally sharp during long spells without possession are standout qualities.

Critics point to his height or occasional lapses at club level, but in an England shirt, Pickford has been reliable when it mattered.

Dean Henderson

After periods disrupted by injury and inconsistency earlier in his career, Henderson has re-established himself as a clear first-choice goalkeeper at club level. His recent performances in league and cup competitions have been built on control, confidence and command of his penalty area.

He ranks highly for save percentage, and he’s been particularly effective at close range – an increasingly valuable trait as Premier League attacks generate more chances inside the box. Henderson is proactive in dealing with crosses, comfortable sweeping behind his defence, and increasingly vocal in organising those in front of him.

Physically, he offers a different profile to Pickford. He’s taller, more imposing and more likely to dominate aerial situations – attributes that can prove decisive in tournament football.

At 27, Henderson is entering what is traditionally a goalkeeper’s prime. The biggest question? International experience. Unlike Pickford, he’s yet to be tested in the pressure of a major tournament knockout game.

How a new manager may sway decisions

Under Southgate, Pickford was always the first name on the team sheet. Continuity mattered, and once Pickford established himself, his position was rarely debated. That certainty might not hold under Thomas Tuchel.

With Tuchel now in charge, everything is being reassessed. Goalkeepers under Tuchel at club level have been judged heavily on how they suit the system in front of them – command of space, communication, and reliability under pressure often outweigh reputation. That shift in approach could favour Henderson.

If Henderson maintains his current form, this might no longer be about waiting patiently behind an established number one. Under Tuchel, the England goalkeeper spot is more open than it’s been in years.
